The ABC’s of Scripture: ALL MEN

ALL MEN:

The use of the word “ALL” in New Testament must be taken in context. For example, Paul told Timothy that God “desires ALL MEN to be saved.”. We know that not ALL MEN will be saved. We know that God is sovereign and is able to accomplish all that He desires. Therefore, we must try to understand the context of these kinds of statements.

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, WHO DESIRES ALL MEN TO BE SAVED and to come to the knowledge of the truth. – 1 Tim. 2:3-4.

The meaning of this is revealed to us in the context of the next passage in which it is stated. In this case is clarified for us by the previous verses. Paus says that “supplications, prayers, intercession, and given thanks be made for ALL MEN” -1 Tim 2:1

He then explains that he is talking about “all kinds of men”, not just Jews, or regular folks. But even “for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” – 1 Tim 2:2

This verse is describing what Saul (Apostle Paul) experienced when the LORD saved him. God and Ananias, a devout Jewish man: announced that God was calling Paul to be His witness of the gospel to ALL MEN. This is “ALL KINDS OF MEN”, not only the Jews, but also the Gentiles. Paul then became know as the Apostle to the Gentiles. -Acts 22:11-15.

And so ALL ISRAEL WILL BE SAVED, as it is written: ‘The deliverer will come out of Zion, and He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob.” -Rom 11:26

Paul wrote to the Romans and said that all believing Jews and believing Gentiles, who are all true spiritual Jews by faith in Christ, would be saved. He explained in this epistle to the Romans that “NOT ALL ISRAEL IS ISRAEL”, He said that they were not all children of God just because they were of the physical seed of Abraham. But it is in Isaac that the seed is blessed. That is, the children of promise through faith, not flesh, are counted by God as Abraham’s seed. – Rom 9:6-8.

“just as I also please ALL MEN in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that THEY MAY BE SAVED.”-1 Cor 10:33

Paul clarified that the meaning of this verse by the previous verse. He told the Corinthians to ‘give no offense’ either to the Jews or to the Greeks, or to the church of God”, -1 Cor 10:32. In other words just as Paul was pleasant to ALL MEN, Jews and Gentiles, the Corinthians were to do likewise so that they would give no offense to “all kinds of men” for the purpose that God’s elect among the Jews and Gentiles may be saved.

You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by ALL MEN.”-2 Cor 3:2

Paul told the Corinthians that they were his epistle of the authority of his ministry and proof of his speaking as from God. By their faith, they were a letter of reference or commendation for Paul and Timothy. This authority was recognized and known by “all kinds of men”, Jews and Gentiles, who would read their inspired words -2 Cor 3:1-3

“For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of ALL MEN, especially of those who believe.”- 1 Tim 4:10

In Paul’s first letter to Timothy, he said that the living God is the Savior of ALL MEN, Jews and Gentiles. He clarified the meaning of this, by saying that He is the only Savior who is acceptable to God, for, “all kinds of men”, Jews and Gentiles. Not all would actually be saved; but only those who believe in Him would be saved.
